YACRO has been selected by the Disability Support Program as one of only two organizations in the western region that will help launch the new service area of HomeShare in Nova Scotia!
HomeShare is where a supported person lives with their caregiver(s) in the caregivers’ home, or the caregiver comes to live in the supported persons’ home.
Living in a HomeShare means the supported individual gets to choose where they live and who they live with. To make this possible, the YACRO HomeShare coordinators will gather information from the individual regarding what they are looking for in a home.This can include things like finding out what area they want to live in, whether they want kids or pets in the home, the preferred gender of the caregiver, and the type of caregiver they are looking for.
The coordinators then use this information to help find the best possible match in a caregiver (called a HomeShare provider).
The person supported and the HomeShare provider will have the opportunity to meet and connect prior to committing to the arrangement. For the move to proceed, both parties must agree that it is a good match.
All HomeShare providers undergo an extensive interview which includes several visits to their home. They also must fulfil the same screening requirements as all our other workers (a clear criminal record check, first aid certificate, good references, etc.).
Being a HomeShare provider can be a very rewarding role to take on. Sharing ones’ home with someone with a disability gives the provider a chance to be a mentor, an advocate, and to help the person supported gain skills and independence. It also gives the provider companionship, the knowledge they are making a difference, and a source of income (compensation varies based on support requirements).
