Over the summer, YACRO had the incredible opportunity to partner with the Southwest Paddlers Association to launch an adaptive paddling program that opened new possibilities for the people we support. What began as an idea to connect individuals with the outdoors has grown into a meaningful experience that has built skills, confidence, and community.
Over eight weeks, participants developed hands-on paddling skills, learning proper stroke technique and water safety to understand balance, teamwork, and navigation. Each week brought new growth, as individuals gained both technical ability and self-assurance. For many, it was their first time in a kayak, and the sense of accomplishment was evident in every smile and every “I did it!” moment.
The program emphasized personal development and empowerment. As participants became more comfortable on the water, they discovered new strengths within themselves, including patience, focus, determination, and courage. These are skills that go far beyond the water’s edge, carrying over into everyday life and increasing independence and self-esteem.
The social impact of the adaptive paddling program was just as powerful as the physical one. Each paddling session created space for connection between participants, volunteers, and community members. Sharing the same goal and the same joy of being outdoors fostered friendships, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. It reminded us all that inclusion is not about doing things for people, it’s about doing things together.
This program would not have been possible without the commitment and heart of the Southwest Paddlers Association. Their members brought expertise, patience, and enthusiasm to every session, creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
A special thanks goes to Sandra Phinney, whose tireless efforts in securing funding, organizing volunteers, and coordinating logistics made the entire program possible. Her dedication truly reflects the spirit of community partnership and inclusion that drives this initiative.
